Carjacking Suspect Taken into Custody by Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Deputies from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team (a team formed in 2021 to allow the Sheriff's Office flexibility to saturate areas deemed high crime areas by SO Crime Analysts) arrested a carjacking suspect on November 2nd.

At around 6:43 PM. Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a call from a victim in the 9400 block of E. Iliff Ave. The victim stated someone had held her at gunpoint and stole her car from her garage. The victim told responding Deputies that she could track her car using an application on her phone. Deputies on-scene aired the vehicle's location, and SRT deputies responded to the area and located the vehicle. SRT followed the car intending to do a vehicle takedown when the situation was appropriate and safe. SRT deputies attempted to stop the vehicle on I-225 at E. Mississippi Ave. The stolen vehicle accelerated north on I-225 while SRT pursued the car. SRT lost a visual of the vehicle in the area of I-70 and I-225. Deputies at the carjacking scene were able to update the vehicle's location using the victim's phone app. Denver Police Department "Air 1" was in the area, got overhead, and started continually airing the stolen vehicle's location to SRT. The suspect eventually abandoned the car in the area of Netherland St and E. 52nd Ave. Air 1 provided continual visual support until SRT, with the assistance of Aurora SWAT, was able to detain and arrest the suspect. Deputies found a backpack belonging to a juvenile with a Gock replica BB gun in the car.

Five juveniles occupied the vehicle, ages ranging from 13 to 16 years old. Deputies determined on the scene that one of the juvenile males was the primary suspect and was placed into custody for:

18-4-202 1st Degree Burglary, no force, residence F3

18-4-301 Robbery – Armed Carjacking F4

18-4-409(4)(a) 2nd Degree Motor Vehicle Theft, Aggravated 20,000 F5

18-9-116.5 Felony Eluding F5

42-4-1401 Reckless Driving TM2

42-2-101 Drove without a Valid License TM2

18-4-501 Criminal Mischief <$300 M3

The other four juveniles were turned over to their parents and are pending charges from Sheriff's Office Investigators.

Due to the suspects' ages, names and booking photos will not be released.
