The Mile High Flood District (MHFD) is partnering with 41 local governments to create master plans for drainage improvements throughout the Denver Metropolitan area; design, construct, and maintain stream corridors, including removal of trash and debris; provide flood warning services; and develop resources related to improving water quality in our streams. Among the projects MHFD is pursuing in 2021:
Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Projects
This program leverages local government dollars to fund stream projects that reduce flood risk and provide community amenities. The 2021 Work Plan includes the following projects for Arapahoe County:
- First Creek Detention
- Cherry Creek – at Arapahoe Road
- Little’s Creek – at Gallup
Easterly Creek – 11th and Havana- Dakota Avenue – Tributary
- Big Dry Creek – Orchard Road to County Line Road
- Happy Canyon Creek – Jordan Road to Broncos Parkway
- Willow Creek – Countyline to Quebec
- Dry Gulch – Yale Avenue to University Boulevard
- Little Dry Creek – at Broadway
- South Englewood Basin
- Jackass Gulch – at Highline Canal
- No Name Creek – at Quincy to Shawnee Way
Studies
Watershed Planning studies that have been requested or sponsored by municipalities within Arapahoe County in 2021 include:
- Little Dry Creek (Downstream of Reservoirs) Major Drainageway Plan
- Murphy Creek and Tributaries Major Drainageway Plan and Flood Hazard Area Delineation
Stream Maintenance Efforts
This program helps local governments manage publicly owned reaches of regional streams. The 2021 Work Plan includes the following efforts for Arapahoe County:
- Annual Vegetation Management & Debris Removal
- Sediment Removal
- Restoration Projects
- Minor Repairs
Special Projects
MHFD is starting several Special Projects in 2021. These are related to data development, guidance, and research. Many are district-wide efforts. The following are specific to Arapahoe County:
