Prevent a "fall through" with ice safety tips

Ice fishing pond

There have already been several instances this year in Colorado of people falling through ice while attempting to ice fish. There probably is no such thing as “safe” ice, but Colorado Parks & Wildlife has shared some guidelines everyone should consider before stepping foot on a frozen pond or lake.

In Colorado, ice conditions can vary from lake to lake and along the Front Range, it is especially important that people check ice conditions before heading out because of the region’s notoriously variable weather conditions.

The Rule of Thumb for Ice:

  • 2 inches or less - STAY OFF
  • 4 inches of good ice for a person
