Evidence

The Evidence Section preserves and stores evidence for several jurisdictions in Arapahoe County, as well as for the City of Centennial, Columbine Valley Police departments and Cherry Creek State Park.

On average, the evidence section maintains approximately 50,000 items for evidence, found property or safekeeping. These items are under strict guidelines for chain-of-custody to ensure their integrity so they are admissible in court. They also have the responsibility of being available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to major crime scenes to secure and transport all gathered evidence. They meticulously follow guidelines to ensure the integrity of all items received, held and released from our custody.

Evidence Disposal

In addition to processing evidence/property, technicians also are responsible for the return of property to its owners, the recycling of materials used in packaging or found in unclaimed property and the destruction of contraband and unclaimed property. Drugs are destroyed by burning and guns and knives are crushed and cut to the size of nickels.

Evidence Retrieval

Technicians retrieve evidence from numerous jurisdictions, such as Littleton, Englewood, Sheridan, Cherry Hills, Greenwood Village, Glendale and Parker Police departments, to be processed by our crime lab. Technicians also transport evidence to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for processing of lab work that cannot be accomplished within our own lab, such as DNA and ballistics testing.
