The Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad consists of eight members, three of which are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The bomb squad responds to chemical and bomb reports throughout Arapahoe County, as well as assists other agencies when requested.
Bomb Squad members work and train with surrounding area bomb squads, hazardous materials teams (HAZMAT) and special weapons and tactics (SWAT) teams to benefit all communities, by ensuring a cohesive multi-jurisdictional response to major events. Each technician goes through extensive training in emergency responses involving bombs and chemical agents, or biological hazards. A robot which can be operated from a distance of several hundred feet, a bomb disposal trailer, and X-ray technology are tools used by the bomb squad to evaluate and handle unknown packages and situations.
The ACSO Bomb Squad is accredited through the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations) Bomb Squad Commanders Committee. To be accredited, the bomb squad must have the FBI listed mandatory equipment and meet stringent training standards.
