The Crime Scene Unit (CSU) is responsible for responding to crime scenes to document, identify, collect and preserve evidence. They also assist Investigations with documentation for search warrants. The staff is extensively trained in crime scene photography, latent fingerprint processing techniques, footwear documentation, trace evidence identification, alternative light sources, death investigation, bloodstain pattern analysis, shooting reconstruction, and crime scene reconstruction. They work business hours and a weeklong on-call rotation to cover nights, weekends, and holidays. They work closely with Investigators and regularly testify in court.
The CSU staff is also on call 24 hours, seven days a week, as members of the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) for the 18th Judicial District. The CIRT provides an independent, transparent, and unbiased investigation into officer-involved use of deadly force or potentially lethal force cases.
The CSU provides training to patrol through the Patrol Transition Academy and the Arapahoe County POST Academy. They also participate in teaching at various community events, including the Citizen’s Academy and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Open House.
