Special Victims Unit (SVU) and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC)

ICAC is a specialized investigative unit within the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office that engages in proactive and reactive investigations and prosecutions of people involved in child abuse and exploitation online.

In a six month period (October 2018-March 2019), the SVU/ICAC unit arrested more than 60 people on charges related to online child pornography and unlawful activities such as predators targeting juveniles online, gaming websites, PS4/XBOX, chat websites, dating websites etc. for the purpose of sex. One offender caught by ICAC was sentenced in March of 2019 to 20 years in prison.

Safety Tips

Parents should monitor their children's social media and teach their kids how to be safe online. In addition to the tips below, please visit ConnectSafely.org.
  • Monitor the websites, apps and games that your children play and use. Make sure they are age appropriate. If they have parental settings, use them.
  • Turn off chat rooms, especially in games, as predators lurk there.
  • Consider downloading the free app, OurPact, on your child's phone. The app allows parents to block texts and apps, like Facebook, Snapchat, music and YouTube, at any time with a push of a button.
  • Don't allow children to use their real names, dates of birth or other identifying information in their user name. For example, don't use Jack011506. Instead, have them create a fake name like Mandy2019.
